Qiling Disk Master allows users to clone a single partition, such as the (C:) partition to (D:) on the same drive, or the (E:) partition to another disk, rather than cloning the entire disk.

This feature is useful if you would like to just clone one partition instead of the whole disk to another path.

Partition cloning is a technique that creates an exact copy of a hard drive or partition, allowing for easy duplication of data, operating systems, and software configurations. This is useful in various scenarios, such as creating a backup of a critical system, duplicating a software installation for testing or deployment, or even creating a duplicate of a hard drive for a new computer. Additionally, partition cloning can be used to migrate an operating system to a new hard drive, or to create a clone of a hard drive for use in a virtual machine.

Hard Drive Upgrade: Upgrading an old hard drive to a larger capacity or faster one can be done conveniently through partition cloning. This method allows you to clone all data and partition structure from the old drive to the new one, saving the hassle of reinstalling the operating system and applications.

Data Migration: Partition cloning is a fast and efficient way to transfer data from one hard drive or partition to another, useful for computer replacement, data backup, or transferring data between different systems.

Experimentation and Testing: Partition cloning in software development and system administration allows for the creation of identical test environments. A baseline system is set up, then cloned into multiple test environments, enabling various experiments, testing, and debugging to be performed on each clone. This approach can be useful for testing and validating software or system changes without affecting the original system.

Create Partition Clone in Windows 10 step by step

Prerequisites for Partition Clone:

To upgrade your Windows 10 system to a new drive, first connect the destination drive, such as a hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD), to your current Windows 10 computer. Ensure the selected drive is large enough to contain the system partitions. If you're using a laptop, you may need an external disk enclosure or USB-to-SATA cable to connect the new drive.

To proceed, download and install the software on your computer, which supports Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, XP, and Vista. For server users, you may want to try Qiling Disk Master Server instead.

Detailed steps about how to clone the partition

1. Select the Tools and utilities tab, and then select Partition Clone in the left tab page.

2. Select the source partition or volume you want to clone, then click the "Next" button.

Select Source Partition

3. Select a destination partition on the desired disk, and click Next.

Select Destination Partition

Tips: Before proceeding, make sure to backup any important files or data on the destination partition or volume, as it will be formatted and all existing data will be overwritten.

4. Preview the information detailing your source and destination selections, and set desired advanced settings on the wizard page.

  • Edit Partition: Assign a drive letter and set the partition type as either primary or logical, allowing for the graphical Partition Bar to be dragged and moved to change the partition size or location, a feature available in higher editions.
  • Sector by sector clone: Copy all sectors of the source partition to the destination partition, regardless of whether they are in use or not, as long as the destination drive/partition size is equal to or larger than the source partition.
  • SSD Alignment: If the destination disk is an SSD, it's recommended to select this option to optimize SSD performance.

5. Click Proceed, wait for the process to complete, and then click Finish. A partition clone can take several hours depending on the size of the source partition.

Notes:
  • A partition clone might take several hours to complete, with the time required depending on the size of the source partitions.
  • The source partition cannot be selected as a destination partition.
  • Any important data on the destination partition must be backed up before cloning, or it will be lost.
  • If the destination partition is locked by other programs and/or applications, Disk Master will ask the computer to restart to perform the partition clone operation in "Restart Mode".
  • For encrypted partitions or non-NTFS/FAT32 partitions, Disk Master will use sector by sector clone mode by default.
  • Partition Clone can only clone a dynamic volume from a dynamic disk to a basic disk.
  • Besides Partition Clone, AOMEI Backupper can also be used to clone a hard drive to a larger drive, migrate Windows 10 to an M.2 SSD, clone a hard drive to an SSD, clone a HDD to an SSD via USB cable, and clone Windows 10 to an NVMe SSD.

Conclusion

Partition cloning is a crucial data management technique that enables quick and reliable data backup, system migration, and experimentation, ultimately enhancing data protection and system management capabilities.

FAQs:

Q: Why the cloned drive becomes "RAW" after disk clone?

A: If your source drive is BitLocker encrypted, try cloning the disk again or decrypt the encryption to clone the disk normally.
