Quick Navigation:
You've purchased a Dell XPS 15 9550 in January and attempted to create a recovery drive using a USB larger than 16GB, but the process fails with an error message "a problem occurred while creating the recovery drive".
I apologize that the issue persists after updating your model. To further assist you, could you please provide more details about the problem you're experiencing, such as the specific symptoms or errors you're encountering? This will help me better understand the issue and provide a more accurate solution.
To fix the issue of the recovery drive creation failing, you can try backing up system files to a large-capacity USB flash drive, ensuring it has enough room, and then follow the methods to resolve the issue.
If creating a recovery drive in Windows 10 fails, it may be due to a corrupted drive. In this case, try running a full format on the drive instead of a quick format to resolve the issue.
1. To format a USB drive, plug it into your computer, open File Explorer, right-click on the USB drive, and select the "Format" option.
2. Keep the same file system and allocation unit size, but uncheck the box before quick format. Confirm the settings and click start.
3. You will receive a warning of data loss. Click OK to start formatting the drive.
4. Once the format is completed, recreate the recovery drive to see if it can be created successfully.
If Windows 10 can't create a recovery drive, it may be due to corrupted system files. To resolve this, try running the System File Checker (SFC) tool to scan and repair any corrupted system files. This can be done by opening Command Prompt as an administrator, typing "sfc /scannow" and pressing Enter.
1. To open the Command Prompt as an administrator, press the Windows Key + X on your keyboard, and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
2. Run the command `sfc /scannow` in Command Prompt to verify and repair the OS. This command will scan all protected system files and replace any corrupted ones.
3. Type exit and press Enter to exit Command Prompt.
4. To resolve the issue that a problem occurred while creating the recovery drive, restart your computer and recreate the recovery drive. This should allow you to complete the process successfully.
If you're still unable to create a recovery drive in Windows 10, you can try using another tool like Qiling Disk Master Standard, which is easy to use and free.
Follow the instructions below to create a recovery drive via Qiling Disk Master:
Step 1. Connect a USB drive to your computer, download, install, and launch Qiling Disk Master.
Step 2. To create a bootable media, click on the "Tools" option located at the left panel of the window, and then select the "Create Bootable Media" option from the right panel.
Tip: The created disc will support both legacy/MBR and UEFI/GPT boot mode.
Step 3. Select the "USB Boot Device" option and click "Next". You will then be prompted to format your USB drive, at which point you should click "Yes" to proceed. This will create bootable media.
Notes:
If the methods to create a recovery drive don't work, you can try using Qiling Disk Master, which can help create a recovery drive and also sync a laptop and a desktop in Windows 10, as well as perform sector-by-sector cloning.
