A hard disk drive (HDD) stores data on a rotating platter and uses a mechanical arm with a read/write head to access it. An HDD image, on the other hand, is a compressed copy of the entire drive, condensed into a single file for space-saving purposes.
After creating an HDD image, you can use it to restore the drive to a normal state, retrieve individual files, or restore the image to another hard drive, making it useful for backup or migration purposes.
Windows Backup and Restore allows you to create system images, backing up all partitions required for your system to run, as well as additional partitions, enabling a disk image backup for bare metal recovery.
This feature is an older, error-prone, and cumbersome option that is less efficient than using a disk imaging tool like Qiling Disk Master Standard.
You can download the software from the link below to try it out. A server edition is also available for Windows Server users.
Qiling Disk Master Standard is a free tool that allows you to create a hard drive image, supporting both HDDs and SSDs, and compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP of both 32bit and 64bit versions. To create an HDD image with Qiling Disk Master, you can follow the steps to use this tool.
How to create hard drive image with Qiling Disk Master:
Step 1. Install the tool and launch the main interface, then select Disk Backup under the Backup tab.
Step 2. Select the hard drive you need to backup and choose the target path to save the disk image. You can also customize the backup settings if needed. Finally, click Proceed to start the backup process.
Step 3. Click Finish when the operation is completed.
Useful additional options:
Advanced features you may need in Professional edition:
To create a Windows image using the built-in option, search for "backup settings" and click "Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" on the open-up window, and then follow the steps to create a HDD image.
How to create disk image with Windows Backup and Restore:
1. To create a system image, click on the "Create a system image" link on the left side of the page. This will initiate the process of creating a system image.
2. Save the image to a destination other than your local drive, such as an external hard drive or cloud storage.
3. System-related drives are selected by default. You can choose additional drives on this hard drive disk you want to backup.
4. Confirm the information and then Proceed.
Wait for the backup to complete. You will then have a disk image that can be used for bare metal recovery, but note that this backup cannot be used to restore individual files. To restore a disk, you will need a recovery drive and select System Image Recovery from Advanced options.
To create a hard drive disk (HDD) image or solid state drive (SSD) image in Windows, there are two methods available. The first method involves using a third-party tool, which can be time-consuming and may not be compatible with all systems. In contrast, the second method is recommended for its efficiency and compatibility, allowing users to create a precise copy of their HDD or SSD with minimal effort and maximum reliability.
With Qiling Disk Master, you can create HDD or system images for backup, restore from them, and even clone a HDD to an SSD directly, eliminating the need for a restore process.
