The difference between free space and unallocated space

Free space is a portion of a partition's capacity that is not being used, leaving available storage space that can be used directly to store data. In contrast, unallocated space requires being added to an existing partition or creating a new partition before data can be stored.

Why allocate free space to C drive?

To free up space on your other partition and allocate it to your C drive, you can try deleting unnecessary files on the other partition, or moving some files to an external drive or cloud storage. You can also consider shrinking the other partition to make more space available. If you're using Windows, you can use the built-in Disk Management tool to shrink the partition and then expand your C drive to use the newly freed space.

To move the 70 GB unallocated space into Drive C, you can use the Disk Management tool in Windows. First, open Disk Management by pressing the Windows key + R, typing "diskmgmt.msc", and pressing Enter. Then, right-click on the unallocated space and select "Extend Volume".

"You're running out of space on your C drive, which is slowing down your computer. You want to move free space from another partition to your C drive to free up some space and improve performance. I'd be happy to help you with that!"

Occasionally, the partitions on a hard drive are not rationally sized, with the system partition often allocated a relatively small amount of space. As a result, after installing programs, saving personal files, and upgrading Windows, the C: drive may run out of disk space. To address this issue, many computer users want to allocate free space from other partitions to extend the system partition.

How to get more free space

▶ Disk Management

Windows has a tool called Disk Management that allows you to extend a partition, but it requires unallocated space next to the partition you want to resize. You can open Disk Management by pressing Windows + R, typing "diskmgmt.msc", and following the prompts.

Usually, there is no unallocated space behind the partition that you want to extend. In that case, you need to delete a partition before you can extend another.

▶ Uninstall unused applications

Many users opt to check their programs to identify unused apps and uninstall them to free up space.

▶ Disk Cleanup

Windows has a built-The Disk Cleanup tool allows users to delete temporary files, system files, and other unnecessary data, freeing up space on their computer. After using the tool, previous installation files are saved in the Windows.old folder, which can then be deleted using the Disk Cleanup tool itself, allowing users to wipe out unnecessary files and gain some free space.

While methods like deleting unnecessary files, compressing data, and using cloud storage can temporarily free up space, they don't address the underlying issue of increasing data over time, which will eventually lead to the same storage problems recurring.
